He was known as "Jimmy Joe" and he had a huge sense of humor, a boistrous laugh and mischievous streak.

In study hall once, he got all our attention and laughs when he left his chair in the far front left of the big room and all the way to the rear door, he whistled as if a bomb were dropping. When he reached the door he kicked the waste can there and made his exit. Everyone (except the teacher) was in stitches.

I'm sure he was a confident and capable squad leader and had earned the trust and respect of those who followed him.

He came from a large family (13 children) and I know he is missed.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The US Naval Forces Vietnam History for March 1968 describes Operation CORONADO XII, a sweep east of My Tho aimed at locating and destroying the 261st VC Main Force Battalion. Two infantry battalions were deployed on 07 March and contact was made the following day by 4th Bn, 47th Infantry about 5 miles northeast of My Tho. The fighting continued until about 3 AM on 09 March. At about that time, FSB HALLORAN just south of the engagement area was brought under attack by mortar fire. The sweep continued through 09 March with the infantrymen withdrawn in the late afternoon.

Forty-four VC dead were left on the battlefield and several small munitions and supply caches were found. Twelve US soldiers were killed in CORONADO XII, one was missing in action, and one sailor was killed in the mortar attack on FSB HALLORAN. The American dead were
