39 years ago today you were lost.
May the angels and you
continue to watch over us
and keep us safe.

My dad's nickname was "Sam", so you may have known him as Sam Carlson (avid sailor from Chicago, Illinois).

From very proud daughter,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 10th Fighter Commando Squadron lost two pilots and aircraft on 07 Dec 1966:
  • Capt John W. Carlson, Chicago, Illinois (F-5C 65-10520) and
  • Capt Derald D. Swift, Vale, Oregon (F-5C 63-8429).
Captain Carlson was hit by small arms fire while bombing a VC support area near Lai Khe, some 25 miles north of Saigon. His aircraft dove into the ground in an unsurvivable crash with no apparent ejection. Captain Carlson's body was not recovered.

About an hour later and 20 miles to the west, Captain Swift was hit by small arms fire while hitting a target south of Tay Ninh. He nursed his aircraft toward Bien Hoa but was forced to eject about 10 miles short of the runway. His parachute malfunctioned and Captain Swift was killed.

The point-of-contact for this memorial is
