The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.

Brookins attended Thomas Edison High School and enjoyed playing guitar. He was drafted into the Army in June 1965 and sent to Viet Nam, where he was assigned to the 610th Transportation Company. The private first class, a clerk-typist, died in Saigon on New Year's Eve 1966, following a fall from a truck. He was 22. He was survived by his wife, a son and daughter, three brothers and four sisters.
