I am doing extensive research on this fine Sergeant Squad Leader of the 25th Infantry Division, 3/22/Company C.
This is the same unit I was in and same company but I came along almost two years later - 12/69 - and I was seriously wounded in Cambodia on 29 May 70. By all medical accounts my name should be on the wall, but someone else decided to spare me for a reason. I have put in a short message on Robert Eugene Bowman and I will put in the complete story on this Ohio farm boy who fought gallantly against a VC and NVA human wave attack at Fire Support Base Burt on 2 Jan 68. He was buried in Ohio on 12 January 68 the same day he was supposed to be in Australia on Rest & Recuperation. He got into hand-to-hand combat as the enemy thrust was right at company C which was set up southeast of the base. A few US bunker positions were overrun at one point but later on were retaken by US soldiers. It was the dropping of napalm right at the front of the perimeter that broke off the attack finally. I have the officer duty logs and combat after-action report on this battle. Additionally this is the battle depicted in the movie Platoon by Oliver Stone who also was a grunt at that base but was assigned to company B.
