REMEMBEREDHe died in the assault on Hill 996. When I first joined the company you looked at me and said "LOOK AT THIS CHERRY". You pointed out my clean fatigues with no holes. That was embarrassing, man. As you poked fun, I asked you, "Have very many men been killed in this company?" You didn't give me an answer. You looked angry that I even asked that question. You turned around and pointed to the mountains and said, "See those mountains? Those mountains and that rucksack is gonna kick your ass, man. Don't worry about no gooks and gettin' killed and s---t like that." Well, I found out you were half right. I do know why you said it though. They heard no fear from you that day. They heard only anger. It was only the mountains and that heavy ruck that bothered you. You were a classic, man, and that's the way I want to remember you. Doc |
