I "met" PFC Anderson while I was a junior in high school in 1987. He's at Panel 70W, Row 001. I don't know his family, or anything about his past, but I am thankful for the role he played in my life. My dad is a Vietnam Vet - he repaired helicopter avionics - and though he'd told me some stories and recommended a few books, I'd always wanted to know more about the War. PFC Anderson inspired me to learn more, and to do more. During college I worked on a collection of oral histories with Veterans in the PTSD program at the American Lake Veterans' Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. I attended several graduation ceremonies for those men (and their families), and spent many hours listening to them tell me about their lives. They didn't tell war stories; they told life stories. For most, I was one of the first non-Veterans ever to hear them talk about their experiences. It's an honor I'll always treasure. I was back in D.C. this fall, a little over 10 years since I'd first met PFC Anderson, and was able to thank him for what he did for me, and wanted to share my gratitude with the world. ©1997 David Berg |

My brothers Ray, Harvey, and I (Evelyn Kunkle Baldwin) grew up in Wellsville, Pennsylvania, along with Johnny. We knew his dad and Uncle Les. I was so sorry to hear about his passing. He was a great kid and loved by everyone.
